Southern Utah University (SUU) has been selected to lead a new statewide NASA aerospace workforce hub, an initiative backed by a substantial $10.5 million, multi-year investment from NASA. This effort is designed to strengthen the pipeline of skilled technical workers for the aerospace industry across Utah. The program aims to connect thousands of Utah students and educators with career opportunities in fields such as welding, machining, electrical work, and advanced manufacturing. For residents of Ogden, Weber County, and Northern Utah, this means new pathways for students to enter high-demand technical careers, bridging the gap between local education and the national space industry.
The new Utah NASA Aerospace Skilled Technical Workforce Hub, or Utah NAS_Hub, seeks to broaden students' understanding of aerospace careers beyond traditional roles like astronauts and engineers. Melinda Pfundstein, SUU’s executive director of Community and Workforce Development, noted that NASA is focusing on building a skilled technical workforce for aerospace through these hubs. Speaking from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston during an onboarding and training session, Pfundstein explained that the initiative aims to encourage students to consider roles in fabricating parts, building valves, or producing the many small components essential for large aerospace systems to function.
The Utah NAS_Hub will unite high school career and technical education programs, colleges, employers, and other partners statewide. This collaborative approach intends to establish a pipeline that connects students with the specific training and skills aerospace employers actually need. Pfundstein emphasized that the initiative extends beyond SUU, explaining that the goal is for the entire state to collaborate in an ecosystem that fosters aerospace opportunities for learners and workers. Key partners in the project include organizations such as 47G Utah Aerospace and Defense, Northrop Grumman, Utah Space Grant, Southwest Technical College, Snow College, Talent Ready Utah, and various school districts across Utah.
These essential skills are already being taught in rural areas, now connected to the aerospace sector. At Manti High School, students are learning trades such as welding, woodworking, engineering, and drafting. Junior Cole Osborn expressed interest in trades like welding or electrical work as potential career paths. This new NASA initiative offers students like Osborn a clearer link between their high school education and the aerospace industry. Junior Kayden Roberts highlighted the program's potential for numerous opportunities for many people.
Dean Olson, a shop teacher at Manti High School, finds the renewed emphasis on manufacturing and skilled trades encouraging, noting it is making kids excited about these fields. Students like senior Whitney Bratton, who helps with engineering in a woods class, and senior Miles Bailey, who enjoys building and creating new things, exemplify the hands-on learning taking place. Bailey recognized the program's reach, saying it was "amazing that they’re affecting small communities like ours." Michael Kilmer, a welding teacher at Manti High, added that the initiative aligns directly with what his students are already preparing for.
Pfundstein highlighted NASA's message that there are many different ways to join the aerospace workforce, recalling an astronaut who began their career as a welder. This underscores SUU's goal to broaden students' understanding of career paths, emphasizing that fabricating parts, valves, and small components are all vital for aerospace systems. For students across Utah who are already working with their hands in classrooms, this initiative could open new perspectives on where their skills can lead. The statewide hub is now getting underway, with SUU and its partners working to establish the training and industry connections to guide students from classrooms into aerospace careers. Cole Osborn summarized the student sentiment, finding the prospect "pretty sweet."
