Ogden's Museums at Union Station opened a new exhibition on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, exploring the history and impact of democracy in America, with a special focus on local civic engagement in Ogden. Titled "Voices & Votes: Democracy in America," the exhibit launched with an opening reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The timing coincides with the ongoing 2026 midterm elections, prompting reflections on the importance of individual voices and votes across the country.

The "Voices & Votes" exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian Institution and Utah Humanities, part of the larger Museum on Main Street program. Utah Humanities Program Director Megan Van Frank noted during the ribbon-cutting that the exhibition traces "the bold American experiment of a government run by and for the people." She explained that Utah Humanities brought this tour to the state as a core part of its America 250 programming, and it has already traveled to other Utah communities including West Valley City, Moab, and Vernal.

Van Frank highlighted the extensive work undertaken by local teams in each community where the exhibit stops. These teams have been developing their own companion exhibits and public programs since last year, ensuring that each location offers a unique experience. She stated that these local projects demonstrate how Utah’s people, places, and stories connect with American democracy. The Museums at Union Station's contribution to this statewide effort is the localized exhibit, "Our City, Our Voice: Civic Engagement in Ogden."

This companion exhibit at the Museums at Union Station delves into Ogden’s history, showcasing how citizens have influenced the city's development over the past 175 years. Hope Eggett, Administrator for the Museums at Union Station, explained that this local component tells the story of how citizens have shaped the city's future over its 175-year history. Displays include various items and stories from past local elections, such as old election pamphlets and a voting booth that was utilized in Weber County during the 1960 election cycle.

Eggett emphasized the exhibition’s timely arrival in 2026, noting its relevance during significant anniversaries. Beyond honoring America's 250th anniversary, the exhibit also commemorates Ogden's 175th anniversary of its incorporation. She added that the display provides an opportunity to reflect on the long legacy of public engagement within the city. This marks the second time a Museum on Main Street exhibition has been hosted at the Museums at Union Station, with the previous instance occurring in 2017.

The concurrent running of the exhibit with the 2026 midterm elections makes it particularly topical, according to Eggett. She observed that it’s "a season that everybody’s already thinking about voting and democracy." The exhibit encourages visitors to consider how people have used their voices and engaged civically in various ways. Several events are planned over the coming months in conjunction with the exhibition.

"Voices & Votes: Democracy in America" will be on display at the Museums at Union Station through Dec. 30, 2026, offering residents and visitors an extended period to explore the themes of democracy and civic participation.
