OGDEN — St. Joseph Catholic Schools in Ogden was recently recognized for its unique educational environment, culminating in a donation from Granite Credit Union. The schools are known for combining faith-based education with academic rigor, while also fostering a strong sense of community and providing individualized attention to each student.

Learning at St. Joseph extends beyond traditional textbooks and worksheets, according to school officials. At the elementary school level, Principal Jean Synowicki makes a point of greeting students at the door every day, setting a personal tone for the school experience.

The emphasis on hands-on learning is evident from the youngest learners in Pre-K classrooms through high school. For instance, sixth-grade history students are currently immersing themselves in the study of ancient Mesopotamia by actively stepping into the roles of people living in its city-states. Rather than simply reading historical accounts, these students are simulating life in the ancient world, engaging in activities like creating their own laws and writing diplomatic messages to other city-states.

Mr. Kelson, a sixth-grade teacher and assistant principal, explained the effectiveness of this method, stating that "When kids simulate history, they tend to learn it a lot better." Students themselves confirm the value of this interactive approach, identifying it as one of their favorite aspects of learning at St. Joseph.

This practical, project-based education continues as students advance through their grades. In another classroom, older students were observed working on projects involving 3D printing, including the creation of 3D-printed statues depicting Catholic saints, further demonstrating the application of modern technology within their curriculum.

Beyond academics, students consistently describe the school's close-knit environment as a key factor in what makes St. Joseph special. As one student put it, “It’s like a family here. It’s like everyone’s friends with each other, and everyone knows each other.” This sentiment underscores the school's success in building strong interpersonal connections among its student body.

At the end of a recent morning visit, Granite Credit Union formally joined Fox 13 News to acknowledge St. Joseph Catholic Schools for their dedicated work with a donation. Spencer Carver, Director of Marketing for Granite Credit Union, praised the students, remarking, "Just seeing the ingenuity and creativity of your students, it's absolutely unbelievable."

Clay Jones, Principal of Saint Joseph Catholic High School, reflected on the importance of such partnerships, noting, “It’s what we’re here for, being part of a community and being supported both ways and trying to do things for each other. It’s the only way to build a good community, and we have a great one here.” The recognition highlights the school's commitment to both academic excellence and fostering a supportive, family-like atmosphere for its students in Ogden.
