RIVERDALE, Utah — Community members convened at a Riverdale church on Saturday, offering widespread support to the Bird family following a devastating house fire. The gathering saw dozens of neighbors contributing aid and comfort to the family, who tragically lost a father and three children in a blaze last week. The mother and three other children survived the incident.
The fundraiser was organized by Brittney Dawson, who was motivated to act after seeing a social media comment from a house fire survivor. Dawson recalled the survivor's advice to "not offer, but to act," which inspired her to organize a donation drive. Neighbors from across Riverdale responded by bringing a variety of items, including clothes, blankets, and canned goods, and many also wrote heartfelt cards for the family.
Dawson noted the profound impact the tragedy has had on the community. She described a collective sense of shock, love, and sympathy among residents, explaining that the fire "hits close to home" for many who recognize it could have affected any family in their area.
Family friend Brooke Edwards was among those who attended the fundraiser and shared her personal experience with the event. She told reporters that she and her husband were awakened by sirens on Thursday morning and witnessed the immediate aftermath of the fire. Edwards described the scene as "unfathomable," expressing deep heartbreak for the mother who is now facing life without half of her family. She also commended the mother's strength, calling her an example.
The deadly fire occurred just before 2 a.m. on Thursday. First responders arrived to find the Bird family's home engulfed in flames, with individuals reportedly trapped inside. The tragic outcome was the death of the father and three of his children, leaving the mother and three remaining children to cope with their profound loss.
Edwards, reflecting on the community's response, stated that she was not surprised by the large turnout, characteristic of their small town. She affirmed the ongoing support the community plans to provide, emphasizing, "We love and support each other, and whatever that looks like moving forward in a week, in a month, in a year, five years, they're just still going to be here to help one day at a time."
For those wishing to contribute directly to the family, a Family Memorial Account has been established at America First Credit Union. The account number is 746009136425. Individuals transferring funds from an existing America First Credit Union account should use the savings account number 9136425.
