Duane Kearsley, a Republican candidate for Weber County Commission Seat A, is advocating for what he calls 'smart growth' to navigate the community's future. Kearsley stresses that county government decisions directly influence residents' daily lives, impacting local infrastructure, economic conditions, public safety measures, and how development is managed.
Kearsley asserts that local decisions should aim to protect Weber County's established way of life and heritage, while also planning sensibly for the future rather than simply reacting to changes. He highlights his real-world operational experience and a lifetime of working within the community as key qualifications for the role.
His background includes serving as a facility manager, where he oversaw more than 400 events annually across a 120-acre facility. This experience, Kearsley explains, has provided him with the skills to manage complex budgets, coordinate numerous moving parts, and deliver results under pressure. He also points to decades spent working, building, and coaching youth sports in the area. Kearsley describes himself as a practical operator and a doer, rather than a career politician.
Kearsley's campaign is centered on bringing responsible business and economic opportunity to Weber County, while simultaneously working to preserve its western heritage and rural roots. He believes that growth should be smart, showing respect for the county's water resources, land, and families. His experience in large-scale project execution and operations has taught him how to bring diverse stakeholders together, cut through bureaucratic processes, and ensure tasks are completed efficiently and correctly.
Regarding compromise, Kearsley states it is not about abandoning core principles but about finding practical solutions that allow a community to progress. He notes that his experience managing large facilities and complex events frequently involved navigating competing priorities, tight timelines, and differing demands from various stakeholders. He suggests that genuine progress emerges from carefully listening, identifying common ground, and then executing a plan that serves all involved without sacrificing the ultimate objective.
In making decisions as a commissioner, Kearsley indicates his approach would involve listening first, conducting thorough research, and anchoring choices in sound principles. He views his primary duty as being to the citizens of Weber County. This means, according to Kearsley, examining hard facts—such as water realities, existing infrastructure limits, and long-term economic impacts—instead of merely responding to the loudest voices present. He maintains that while core values like fiscal responsibility and individual liberty are respected, governance should be based on what is practically right and sustainable for the county's long-term future.
