Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and now based in Monterrey, Aguilar takes Mexican folklore, Brazilian bossa nova, ’60s folk, and ’90s rock and bends them into something that shouldn’t work together but absolutely does. His latest album, “Compita del Destino” (loosely: “Buddy of Destiny”), earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. Fourteen tracks of sun-drenched melodies, including a duet with Jorge Drexler on “Tuyo,” one of the quietest, most beautiful things either of them has recorded.
