Ogden School District students will have expanded opportunities to head to nearby ski slopes this season as part of a statewide growth effort by the Youth Sports Alliance, as KPCW reported. The Park City-based nonprofit organization is expanding its winter sports programming for a second consecutive year, broadening its reach beyond its original Wasatch Back footprint to serve young people across the entire state of Utah.

The alliance was originally established following the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, created specifically to carry on the spirit of the Games. Its primary mission focuses on providing local youth with practical opportunities to participate in winter sports. Historically, the program operated exclusively within the Wasatch Back, an area home to premier Olympic venues such as the Utah Olympic Park in Summit County and the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Wasatch County.

Last year, the Youth Sports Alliance initiated its first major expansion by extending programming into the Wasatch Front through a formal partnership with Ski Utah. The organization has now built upon that foundation by scaling up its structure to include youth residing across the state. The broader distribution of services coincides with early planning and preparation efforts taking place throughout Utah ahead of the upcoming 2034 Winter Games.

Youth Sports Alliance Youth Programs Director Heather Sims told KPCW during an appearance on the station's "Local News Hour" that the organization and the Olympic committee mutually agreed that expanding access to all Utah children was a priority as preparations for the 2034 Games begin to pick up momentum.

According to details shared by Sims, the nonprofit now delivers structured learn-to-ski initiatives to students enrolled across 10 distinct Utah school districts. The geographical reach of these educational partnerships spans from northern Utah down to the southern portion of the state.

In northern Utah, students attending schools within the Ogden School District receive access to outdoor winter recreation at local mountain destinations including Snowbasin Resort, Powder Mountain, and Nordic Valley. At the southern end of the program's footprint, participating students located within the Iron County School District travel to Brian Head Resort for their ski instruction.

This year's programmatic expansion incorporates new resort partners into the alliance's operational framework. For the current season, Nordic Valley, Alta Ski Area, and Brian Head Resort have entered into official resort partnerships with the Youth Sports Alliance for the very first time.

Among the state's commercial ski destinations, Eagle Point Resort stands as the single facility not participating in the program this winter. The resort remains closed while management focuses on rebuilding efforts following damage caused by the Cottonwood Fire during the previous summer season.

In addition to adding new school districts and resort venues, the alliance has altered its scheduling structure to provide more intensive instruction for participating students. Sims explained that participating schools along the Wasatch Front are transitioning from previous single-day outings to expanded instructional models that span four to five program days.

Looking toward future seasons, the Youth Sports Alliance maintains plans for further expansion beyond its traditional winter offerings. Sims stated that the organization intends to grow overall student enrollment figures while simultaneously introducing non-traditional activities and warm-weather outdoor sports.

Specific athletic pursuits under consideration for future expansion include non-winter Olympic events such as mountain biking, sailing, and fencing. Sims emphasized that the core ambition guiding the organization remains focused on trying to "increase participation around the state" across all regions of Utah.

Families and students interested in enrolling in the Youth Sports Alliance after-school initiatives must complete their paperwork promptly. Open registration for the current season's after-school winter programs remains available through Nov. 21.
