SALT LAKE CITY — The No. 17 Utah Utes secured a decisive 33-0 shutout victory over the Utah State Aggies on Saturday, extending their dominance in the rivalry series. Quarterback Devon Dampier led the Utes' offense with two touchdown passes, while the team's strong defensive effort held the Aggies scoreless throughout the game.
Dampier threw for 253 yards, contributing to Utah's impressive 480 total yards. Wide receiver Braden Pegan had a season-high performance, catching eight passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Daniel Bray added to the Utes' scoring with 82 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Overall, Utah averaged 6.5 yards per play, showcasing an efficient offensive attack.
Utah wasted no time establishing control, scoring on four straight drives in the first half. The Utes took a commanding 26-0 lead into halftime. Pegan was a key factor early, catching three passes on Utah's opening drive, which culminated in a 28-yard touchdown toss from Dampier. He continued his productive first half with seven catches for 113 yards and both his scores, including a 37-yard scoring grab with 33 seconds left before the break. By halftime, Utah had already amassed 301 yards and 16 first downs.
The Utes maintained their momentum into the second half. On Utah State’s first drive into the red zone, Rabbit Evans snagged an interception in the end zone, stopping the Aggies' scoring threat. This defensive stand set the stage for Daniel Bray’s 63-yard sprint just four plays later, boosting Utah’s lead to 33-0 with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Utes consistently dominated on both sides of the ball, having outscored their nonconference opponents 142-24 this season, bringing their overall record to 3-0.
For the Utah State Aggies, who now hold an 0-3 record, generating offense remained a significant challenge. Quarterback Grady Brosterhous threw for 130 yards but also recorded an interception. The Aggies mustered only 85 yards before halftime, highlighting their offensive struggles. This loss marks the fourth straight in their rivalry series with Utah, and the Aggies have dropped 16 of their last 17 games to the Utes, a streak that dates back to the 1998 season.
Adding to Utah State's difficult Saturday, the Aggies' leading tackler, Harrison Taggart, was taken off the field in an ambulance during the first half after sustaining what appeared to be a head injury. There was no update on his status by the conclusion of the game.
